Baltimore is a picturesque fishing port on Ireland's beautiful south west coast. It is a lively village with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and pubs and restaurants to suit every taste. Watched over by the ancient castle of the O'Driscolls, Baltimore has had a long and exciting history in which pirates, sea battles and shipwrecks have all featured prominently. Today the mood is altogether peaceful as Baltimore welcomes visitors from all over the world.
The magnificent natural harbour lends itself to watersports of all kinds. Baltimore is a well-known centre for sea angling and diving. It is a favourite port of call for yachts of all nationalities. Westwards lie the enchanting islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin and Heir Island, whose fine sandy beaches can be reached by a short ferry trip from Baltimore pier. A little farther out to sea stands one of the most famous of all seafaring landmarks, the Fastnet Rock lighthouse.
The nearness of the Gulf Stream is apparent in the mild climate and profusion of subtropical plants in gardens and hedgerows. Nearby Lough Hyne, a magical sea loch cradled by wooded hillsides, has the distinction of being Ireland's first marine nature reserve. At sea, whale and dolphin watching is increasingly popular.
